Pregnancy Exposures: Alcohol, Medicines and Other Substances – Community Conversation
Researchers from The University of Western Australia (UWA) are inviting people with lived experience of pregnancy to participate in an in-person Community Conversation. This is an opportunity to share your thoughts and experiences about discussing sensitive topics with health professionals, including alcohol use, medicines and other substances during pregnancy. We are interested in understanding what supports trust and open communication, what barriers may exist, and which health outcomes matter most to people when considering safety during pregnancy. Your feedback will help inform future research in this area.

Who Can Attend?
We welcome:
- People who are currently pregnant, or
- People who have been pregnant within the last five years and live in Australia.
No research experience is required. You do not need to have personal experience with alcohol or medication use during pregnancy to participate. We are interested in hearing a broad range of perspectives and experiences.
What Will Be Discussed?
During this facilitated conversation, attendees will be invited to share their perspectives on:
- Talking with GPs and other health professionals about sensitive topics during pregnancy.
- Factors that make these conversations easier or more difficult.
- The attitudes and behaviours that build trust and encourage open communication.
- What health outcomes are most important when considering the safety of medicines, alcohol and other exposures during pregnancy, including both birth outcomes and longer-term child health outcomes.
Why Attend?
Your insights will help researchers better understand community experiences and priorities related to communication and medication safety during pregnancy. The findings will help shape future research and ensure it reflects the needs, concerns and perspectives of people with lived experience.
Creating a Safe and Comfortable Environment
To support an inclusive and respectful discussion, all members of the research team and scribes attending the event will be female.
