Using advanced scanning techniques to predict risk of lower limb amputations

About the Project and the Involvement Opportunity

We are using advanced scanning techniques, including the use of artificial intelligence, to identify and characterise the type of plaque and calcium that builds up in the arteries of the lower limbs. We are hoping to understand this disease process better and use these techniques to ultimately predict who might go on to have an amputation. If we can improve prediction, then we can improve prevention.

We are looking to improve the lives of people who live with all types of diseases in the lower limbs, including arterial calcification (hardening of the arteries), and recurrent infections.

We are looking for people with lived experience of

  • peripheral arterial disease of the lower limbs
  • recurrent infections or poor blood supply to their legs
  • Lived experience of a lower limb amputation.

We want to co-design this research with people with lived experience of these conditions.
