The transition from paediatric to adult diabetes services is often a difficult time for young people. Competing demands for time and changing priorities can affect the management of diabetes, and young people may find themselves struggling to manage their diabetes as effectively as they did before being discharged from their paediatric diabetes centre.
We are seeking Research Buddies to help shape a study that aims to examine the effects of the transition from paediatric diabetes to adult diabetes services. Research Buddies will work alongside clinicians to help define the most important observations to monitor during the transition process, establish a method for approaching and following up with young people who have recently completed their transition to adult services.
About the Project and the Involvement Opportunity
This project aims to examine the effect of transition from childhood to adult diabetes care. The team will be examining the clinical outcomes such as Glycated Haemoglobin (HbA1c), time in range, attendance rates, and significant health events like Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) or Severe Hypoglycaemia both before and after transition.
This project is specifically focused on young people living with diabetes of all types. The results of this project will be used by health professionals to improve the transition process and ideally make it better meet the needs of those who are moving from childhood to adult diabetes services.
We would like to involve consumers in the development of this project as the clinical results likely will not reveal the entire story about what is happening during transition to adult services. By involving consumers and community advocates, we hope to better understand what the most important factors of the transition process are to consider.
About the Position
The consumer in this project will provide advice about what consumers would like to know about how the transition process affects diabetes management. Ideally the consumer would be able to help identify the areas that consumers are most interested in surrounding how the transition process affects diabetes management.
