Person-Centred Care in Pharmacy

About the Project and the Involvement Opportunity

Pharmacists have an important role to play in healthcare. Pharmacists are among the most highly accessible and trusted health professionals. Person-centred care is when a health professional provides health care that is responsive to the individual’s needs, beliefs, preferences and values. However, there are different understandings of what person-centred care means and how it should be applied in daily pharmacy practice.

Researchers want to:

  • Explore how pharmacists currently understand and deliver person-centred care
  • Understand how individuals experience person-centred care when interacting with their pharmacist
  • Develop recommendations for how person-centred care can be better integrated into future pharmacy practice

Researchers at the University of Western Australia are seeking research buddies with lived experience of receiving care from a pharmacist to help shape research exploring how pharmacists can better understand people’s needs and preferences, and involve them, and their carers where appropriate, in decisions about their health and care.

About the Position

As a Research Buddy, you will work in partnership with the primary researcher (PhD candidate) and research team throughout the project.

You will have the opportunity to share your lived experience and perspectives of receiving care from pharmacists and provide feedback on aspects of the research design. Your input will help refine the research questions, study design, research materials and how the research findings are communicated to the wider community to ensure the research achieves a meaningful impact.

What Am I Expected to Do?

  • Attend regular quarterly meetings with the primary researcher
  • Review documents (e.g., grant applications, consent forms, interview questions)
  • Share your lived experience and insights
  • Help design participant recruitment strategies

What Skills or Experience Do I Need?

We are looking for people who:

  • Have lived experience of receiving care from a pharmacist, such as support managing medications, ongoing care for managing a health condition or other pharmacy health services.
  • Are comfortable sharing their experiences and perspectives.
  • Are willing to contribute to discussions with the researchers.
  • Are interested in helping shape research that could contribute to better care.

You do not have to have any prior research experience. Your lived experience and perspective is what matters most.

How Long Am I Expected to Be Involved?

Consumers involved in this project should anticipate meeting with the researchers once every 3-4 months for approximately an hour each time. There may be occasional email communications in between. Meetings and feedback opportunities will be scheduled to align with key stages of the research. The exact timing and frequency will be discussed with the Research Buddies and will be flexible where possible.

Where Will Meetings Be Held?

A mix of in-person and online, depending on consumer preference.

What Support Is Offered?

An honorarium of $50.00 per hour is available for consumer involvement activities in line with CCIProgram guidelines.
