Oral Cancer Study – all ages

About the Project and the Involvement Opportunity
This research aims to understand why oral cancer is becoming more common in younger people and whether these cancers behave differently. We will analyse historical hospital records to see how often oral cancer is diagnosed in Western Australians, as well as their risk factors and treatment outcomes. We will also speak with newly diagnosed patients to learn more about their experiences and possible risk factors. In the lab, we will study their tumour samples to understand the biology of these cancers and test drugs that may be more effective. Involving consumers with lived experience of oral cancer is essential, as their insights help us focus on the questions that matter most, guide respectful and relevant research, and increase the likelihood that our findings will lead to better care and improved treatment options for future patients.

About the Position
We are seeking Research Buddies to work closely alongside the research team throughout the course of the research project, ensuring that lived experience perspective is provided throughout all phases of the research planning and implementation. Research buddies will provide valuable insights that ensure the study reflects what matters most to patients and is respectful, relevant, and easy to understand.

As a research buddy, you may be asked to:

  • Help shape research questions and study priorities by sharing what issues and experiences are most important to people diagnosed.
  • Advise on the language used in interviews and surveys, ensuring it is clear, sensitive, and appropriate.
  • Review communication materials, such as participant information sheets, to make sure they are easy to read and patient-friendly.
  • Provide input on plain-language summaries for grants, ethics applications, reports, and presentations.
  • Offer feedback throughout the study as new ideas, findings, or challenges arise.

This is a collaborative role, and your involvement helps make the research more meaningful and impactful for future patients.
