Can a specialised PET camera detect Infection and inflammation?

Researchers are developing a specialised PET scan that may detect infections and inflammation anywhere in the body, including cases that cannot be identified through standard imaging or blood tests. Through collaboration with experts from St Jude’s hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, the project aims to improve earlier diagnosis, treatment decisions, and antibiotic use. Consumers will work alongside the research team to provide lived experience insights, help guide study design, review materials, and support the translation of this promising technology into healthcare practice.

About the Project and the Involvement Opportunity

We have a new scan technique that can detect infections anywhere in the body. We are using this technique to identify infections that can’t be detected on other scans or with blood tests. We think this scan will help diagnose and guide treatment in people with infections.

This scan will be used for many people who have infections in a hospital, or outside of a hospital. It will also help decide when to start and stop antibiotics.

We need to understand how to best use this scan, how to educate patients on the scan procedure and we need to know how such an investigation may fit into the priorities of people with lived experience of infections.

About the Position

We would be seeking consumer support to help with the design on how to test this new technique, how it would fit in with the priorities of consumers, and how to help disseminate it.

What Am I Expected to Do?

  • Attend regular meetings with the research team (e.g., monthly or quarterly)
  • Review documents (e.g., grant applications, consent forms, surveys)
  • Share your lived experience and insights
  • Help design participant recruitment strategies

What Skills or Experience Do I Need?

Ideally a person, or a carer of a person, who has a lived experience with moderate or severe infection, including a history of infection that has been difficult to diagnose.

How Long Am I Expected to Be Involved?

1-2 hours every 6 months for 2 years.

Where Will Meetings Be Held?

A mix of in-person and online, depending on consumer preference

What Support Is Offered?

  • An honorarium of $50.00 per hour is available for consumer involvement activities in line with CCIProgram guidelines
  • Training and support provided by the CCIProgram or relevant support body.
