About the Project and the Involvement Opportunity
This study aims to explore the relationship between motor competency, sleep behaviour, emotional wellbeing and physical activity in children aged 6-12. The current literature suggests that children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD experience significant challenges with sleep behaviour, emotional wellbeing and physical activity engagement. However the research is very limited in children with Developmental Coordination Disorder and Low Motor Competency, despite the high co-occurring nature of DCD and ASD and ADHD.
This research project is designed in two phases. Phase 1 will explore the bidirectional relationship between motor competency and sleep in a range of children, while Phase 2 will collect qualitative data from families with lived experience of low motor competency and DCD. Collectively, Phase 1 and 2 data will inform the feasibility of an eHealth intervention that will be designed to improve the health and wellbeing of children with LMC.
This research is designed for families living with LMC and allied health professionals who work with families.
Consumer involvement matters because it is essential we learn from the lived experience of families. Consumer involvements allows for a holistic and collaborative approach that will help shape meaningful and impactful interventions.
About the Position
The Research Buddy will be involved in designing Phase 2 of the research study. This phase involves a 90-minute workshop to learn from families about their experiences of living with low motor competency, what type of intervention would be user-friendly and accessible. Participants in this phase will be a sub-sample of Phase 1 and will have been identified as being low motor competent. Both the child and the parent will be involved in Phase 2, as well as 4-6 Allied Health Professionals who work in this area. The Research Buddy will assist with formulating appropriate and targeted questions to the participants to ensure these focus groups are successful.
