About the Project and the Involvement Opportunity
Despite a commitment to training doctors who will meet the healthcare needs of our community, many medical schools don’t ask community members “what do you want your future doctor to be like?”
UWA and Curtin Medical Schools want to make sure we are training future doctors who can care for people from all walks of life. To do this, we need to think carefully about how we choose students for medical school in WA and hear from many different voices within the community. We want to hear from people living in regional, rural and remote communities about your views on how these selection processes could better reflect community values and expectations. We’re inviting community members to small group discussions to help us understand our community’s expectations.
These discussions will help us understand what rural WA community members would like to see considered when selecting medical students. Your experience and insight will guide recommendations to strengthen selection processes in-line with community values and expectations. These will be shared with medical schools and health programs including nursing, social work and psychology, to support improvements across all health training.
We will also be inviting people to be further involved in making these improvements. This may include collaborating on analysis, helping develop recommendations, being part of further discussions or other opportunities that may become available.
About the Position
This work is focused on making sure community voices are central to the decisions medical schools make. The initial role will be one of discussion and sharing, based on questions developed with community members. The contributions of consumers will form the foundation of co-designed recommendations for improvements to medical student selection.
There is also the opportunity for people involved in these discussions to continue with a more active role in making these improvements. This may include co-production of resources for prospective students, staff and regulators; advisory groups; curriculum co-design.
What Am I Expected to Do?
Share your lived experience and insights in either a one on one individual discussion or as part of a small group
Further opportunities for involvement in curriculum and/or process co-design, course evaluation, student selection, advisory groups, etc.
What Skills or Experience Do I Need?
- Experience as someone who has accessed healthcare while living in a regional, rural or remote area.
- Experience as someone who has interacted with the health system as a patient or carer, or has faced hurdles to accessing safe, timely care.
- Comfortable contributing to discussions in a group setting (though one-on-one interviews may be available if required).
How Long Am I Expected to Be Involved?
The group discussions will include one 2-hour session in June or July 2026. If there are follow-up discussions, these will be held in late 2026.
Where Will Meetings Be Held?
A mix of in-person and online, with flexible options to support people living outside Perth
What Support Is Offered?
- Specify any compensation, training, or resources available.
- An honorarium of $50.00 per hour is available for consumer involvement activities in line with CCIProgram guidelines
- Training and support provided by the CCIProgram or relevant support body.
Honorarium: $80 for group discussion or one on one interview.
Any additional activities (e.g. co-design workshops, advisory groups, etc) will be at the $50 per hour rate recommended in the with CCIProgram guidelines
