New Emergency Mental Health Service for Children and Young People

A new emergency mental health service for children and young people has launched and a review into mental health services for young people has been announced.

The review will be chaired by the WA Chief Psychiatrist, Dr Nathan Gibson, to undertake a targeted and independent review into how the public mental health system cared for the 13-year-old Kate Savage who recently passed away.

The review will focus on the clinical care and comment on how to improve mental health services for young people across inpatient and community-based clinical services.

The findings of the review will form part of the broader Young People Priority Framework, already underway by the Mental Health Commission, which will analyse and make recommendations for young people aged 12-24 years, across both the public health system and non-government services.

The new Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) Emergency Telehealth Service (ETS) launched in July 2020, provides urgent support to children and young people experiencing a mental health crisis. The ETS provides support for young people, families and carers experiencing an urgent mental health crisis. This includes mental health advice, crisis management, assessment and referral to the most appropriate service depending on need.

The service will run from 8am to 2:30am, seven days a week and can be accessed on 1800 048 636
