Involvement opportunity: The Algorithm Will See You Now

Machine learning (ML) systems, algorithms or forms of artificial intelligence (AI), are increasingly able to contribute to, or even take over, diagnostic and screening tasks.

The Australian Centre for Health Engagement, Evidence and Values (ACHEEV) at the University of Wollongong have developed The Algorithm Will See You Now research project to assess the ethical, legal and social implications of ML systems in the health sector. The project responds to the need to prepare for the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of diagnostic and screening AI.

ACHEEV are seeking consumer representatives to submit expressions of interest to join their Expert Reference Group. The focus of the group will be on diagnosis and screening in breast cancer and cardiovascular disease using ML systems.

The group will:

  • Systematically analyse perspectives of professional stakeholders and the general public on the ELSI of using ML systems.
  • Analyse and critique the legal and conceptual frameworks for ML
  • Guide healthcare ML development to be more robust, justifiable and acceptable by incorporating ELSI, directly respond to real clinical practice and data science, and reflect diverse stakeholder perspectives.

Interested consumer representatives are required to:

EOI close at midnight AEDT on Sunday November 29
