About the project and the involvement opportunity
The Royal Commission in Aged Care found some problems with how medications are managed. As a result, they recommended that pharmacists should be placed within these facilities to improve medication practices. Starting in 2023, pharmacists will gradually be introduced into Residential Aged Care Facilities. Our research aims to address this need and help pharmacists adjust to their new roles in aged care facilities. The research has three main parts:
- Creating a virtual Community of Practice, which is like an online group, to support pharmacists as they transition into their new embedded roles. This group will help them connect with other professionals and discuss any challenges they may face.
- Training and building the skills of the pharmacists who will be working directly within the aged care facilities. This will help them become more knowledgeable and capable in their new roles.
- Randomised controlled trial. We will test the impact of medication reviews conducted by the pharmacists in the aged care facilities. They will use a special electronic app that helps manage medications and provides guidance to the pharmacists.
The ultimate goal of this research is to ensure that the introduction of pharmacists into Residential Aged Care Facilities is successful and improves the wellbeing of the residents. By providing support, training, and evaluating the impact of medication interventions, we hope to make a positive difference in the care of elderly individuals living in these facilities.
