Improving eye health outcomes using population data

About the project and the involvement opportunity
Using Western Australia and New South Wales deidentified data gathered from government health records (hospital admissions, Medicare, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme), and data from existing studies (Busselton Baby Boomer Study, Raine Study).

This data will allow a comprehensive overview of eye health service use and enable comparison in service usage and outcomes (such as visual field loss, uptake of eye surgery) across different sections of the community.

The visual field data will enable identification of people with visual field loss (most commonly from the eye disease glaucoma but also other causes such as stroke) and its impact on other aspects of well-being, such as the risk of injury. As the data sets will be large, it will also be possible to use them to develop tools using artificial intelligence technologies to help clinicians identify those people that are at risk of losing vision and becoming blind. As the potential scope of this project is broad, the Advisory Council will be important in helping to prioritise the research goals.
