Diagnostic Testing for Stomach Cancer and SARS-CoV-2 (Research Buddy)

About the project and the involvement opportunity
We are looking for people who have a lived experience of stomach cancer (as a sufferer or carer) as well as an interest in COVID-19.

Stomach cancer is often detected in the later stages making it hard to treat, with only one third of patients surviving past 5 years. Helicobacter pylori bacteria is the strongest known risk factor for gastric cancer. Our tests can identify the most dangerous, carcinogenic variants of this bacteria. There is an effective, low cost and readily available treatment for these bacteria, and by finding and treating it early, we can prevent stomach cancer from developing. We are currently developing tests for early detection that could be used by the pathology services and also in the GP clinic.

We are using similar approaches to create new tests for COVID-19. We are developing tests that can identify whether you have antibodies to specific COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) variants. This could potentially let doctors know whether patients are protected against specific strains, and which vaccines or boosters would be most appropriate for them now. This is vital for our most vulnerable populations and will help people who want to travel to stay protected.
