Developing mRNA therapies for cancer – Community Conversation
Have you or someone you’ve cared for been treated for cancer? Join us for this Community Conversation!
Aggressive and hard to treat cancers affect many Australians. We need more effective therapies that support better quality of life. RNA therapies can be tailored to individual patients and tumours, making it a promising technology for cancer treatment. This new RNA production and innovation node in WA will bring together multidisciplinary groups of RNA technologists, oncologists, consumers, and patient advocates to design, synthesise, test and improve RNA drugs; and tackle aggressive and hard-to-treat cancers.
About the project
RNA, or ribonucleic acid, is a molecule that is crucial for various biological functions. It serves as a messenger that carries instructions from DNA (the blueprint of life) to the parts of a cell that make proteins, which are the building blocks of all living things. RNAs have the potential to transform cancer treatment with more personalised and effective therapies. The Australian Centre for RNA Therapeutics in Cancer (ACRTC) aims to integrate RNA technology with cancer research strengths in Australia to translate discoveries into clinic. The centre will focus on 4 pilot projects: lung cancer, triple negative breast cancer, pancreatic cancer and sarcoma. Through engaging with consumers and people with lived experience, we hope to use the findings to better develop RNA technologies into treatment options that are more aligned with patients’ needs and preferences.
