Dads, let’s talk periods: supportive fatherhood for improving adolescent menstrual experiences (Community Conversation)

Our participatory programme of research engages community members to understand how fathers can better support their daughters through menstruation. During their periods, many women and girls experience physical and mental discomforts and lack the confidence to engage in everyday activities. These can lead to poorer psychological health, relationships and participation in social, educational and employment opportunities. Most attempts to improve menstrual health have focused on ‘silver bullet’ solutions, e.g., free menstrual products, but if we want to move to a world where periods are normalised and those who experience them feel supported, it is key for those who do not menstruate to better support those who do.

A set of people who don’t have periods but who have an interest in supporting women and girls are Dads. When included in research studies, fathers express a desire to understand menstruation and their daughters’ experiences. Yet no work has been undertaken on how to provide fathers with the skills and information they need and want to enable this support.

The culmination of this research will be a co-designed training programme for Dads (in a format defined by research participants themselves) to progress towards a society where adolescent girls are better supported and the negative impacts of menstruation on their everyday lives are reduced.

This Community Conversation will help us understand how Dads support their daughters through their periods, what information Dads think they need to be able to support their daughters better, and how Dads think we can engage more fathers in conversations around menstruation, so that they can be better allies to their teenage daughters.
