Consumer Lead Medication Reviews – Community Conversation

Polypharmacy (the use of multiple medications) is a growing public health concern and older people with complex medicines regimens are at risk of harm. Overmedication and adverse drug events requiring medical care affect a large number of people. This is costly, but also two thirds of these events are preventable. Current existing pharmacist medicine review programs for people living in the community and funded by the Australian government have limited uptake and effect. This resulted in pharmacist frustration and GPs questioning the relevance of these reports.

This proposed study flips the traditional medicine review process and it supports the consumer as the ‘key driver’ in their care by supporting and empowering the consumer to initiate the process of a medicine review through shared decision making by prescriber and pharmacist. This aligns with findings that consumers strongly express that interventions to optimise medicines should be consumer directed and that technology is increasingly used for health information and web-based apps to access health care are acceptable to many older people.

This Community Conversation allows facilitation of informal, open conversations around the topic on consumer initiated medicine review to optimise medicine regimes to align with their priorities and treatment goals. This will allow researchers to obtain a range of opinions and views from a group of people with relevant lived experience. This is through the encouragement of attendees to reflect upon their own relevant community experiences and contribute to these discussions within a safe and comfortable space.

The key themes and ideas from this Community Conversation will be used to inform current or future research projects in this space.

Experience required:

  • Lived experience of pharmacy use
  • Over 65 years of age

An $80 honorarium is offered and light refreshments will be provided.

Registrations are essential.

Please complete the Expression of Interest (EOI) form below if you’d like to be considered for this Community Conversation. Because we aim to include a range of perspectives and lived experiences, places are limited and EOIs will be reviewed to ensure a balanced mix of participants with the relevant lived experience.
