DESCRIPTION:Join the Health Consumers’ Council for a conversation with the Department of Health’s Assistant Director General about the new WA COVID Care at Home program. \nAs we prepare for living with greater numbers of COVID-19 cases in the community\, the Department of Health has launched WA COVID Care at Home. While most people with COVID-19 will be able to care for themselves at home\, with some support from their GP\, other people may have risk factors that mean their symptoms may be more severe and put them at greater risk of requiring hospitalisation. \nWA COVID Care at Home will deliver home monitoring care for COVID-positive people who require it. SUMMARY:Phage Therapy - Information Session
DESCRIPTION:The discovery of antibiotics is one of the greatest medical advances of the 20th century\, where they have been used to successfully treat many previously untreatable bacterial infections. However\, their success has been accompanied by the emergence of antibiotic resistance (also known as antimicrobial resistance; AMR). This is where bacteria have evolved to “resist” the mechanisms by which antibiotics have their effect. \nAs such\, the World Health Organisation has named AMR as one of the top current global public health threats\, estimated to account for over 10 million deaths in under 30 years if nothing is done. With little investment into finding new antibiotics\, alternative treatments are being explored including phage therapy. \nWhat are Phages and Phage Therapy? \nPhages are viruses that only infect and kill specific bacteria and can be found everywhere in the environment. They have been used overseas on a compassionate use basis with great success and have been shown to have no side effects. \nResearchers at the Wal-yan Respiratory Research Centre at Telethon Kids Institute have worked closely with clinicians to create a large collection of AMR bacteria causing infections in WA and have found phages specific to these. These researchers have joined forces with others in Australia to form The Australian Phage Network\, by leading the WA arm with the goal to treat the first patient with phage therapy within 12 months. \nWe invite you to hear from leaders of the WA arm of the Australian Phage Network: Associate Professor Anthony Kicic (Head\, Airway Epithelial research group\, Wal-yan Respiratory Research Centre) and Professor Stephen Stick (Director\, Wal-yan Respiratory Research Centre); together with Dr Anna Tai (Adult Respiratory Physician\, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital) about the scientific and clinical implications of phage therapy. \nPlease join us for a virtual information evening to learn more about progress towards phage therapy in WA. DESCRIPTION:The Consumers Health Forum of Australia (CHF) will be holding their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday 23 November\, 2020. Registrations are essential. \nThe AGM will also launch the CHF’s Consumer Commissions’ report on the lessons for consumers from the COVID experience. For people involved in health delivery and policy\, it has become commonplace to hear that COVID has generated the impetus and necessity for change in health care\, the expansion of telehealth being a prime example of this shift in gears. \nBut that should be just the start of COVID-induced initiatives in health. Societal dynamics right now mean Australia has a rare opportunity to continue with reforms that are practical and feasible\, but which have been blocked by institutional inertia previously. With the Federal Government next year expected to announce significant changes in primary and preventive health\, we need to ensure that our considered thinking holds an important place in new policy directions. \nCHF also have nominations for position open on the CHF board.

DESCRIPTION:The Autism CRC invites you to the official premier event of their Quality of Life Photovoice Gallery\,  a unique research  output which offers an insight into what affects the quality of life for autistic adults\, told from their own perspective\, through photography and spoken word. \nThe Gallery is the result of an Autism CRC research project led by Curtin University. It will also be an opportunity to meet our growing team and learn about our future plans. \nWhile we would love to invite you to join us in person\, we’re mindful there’s still a risk of COVID-19 so we hope you will join us for this virtual event.
